pull some strings to get the job
To 'pull some strings' means to exert influence over a situation or decision by taking advantage of connections or power in order to gain advantage unofficially or unfairly. This expression comes from the image of a puppeteer manipulating a marionette by literally pulling strings. If someone says 'I'll try to pull some strings' they mean they will try to help the situation from the inside.
