The verb to linger a means to stay around or continue to exist for longer than expected. If a person lingers somewhere it means they stay for a longer time than is necessary.

2. I love how the smell of this perfume lingers for hours after I apply it.
3. The local council has applied at tar paint to some walls in the area to prevent teenagers from gathering and  lingering in the area.
