A ‘parley’ is a conference or negotiation between two or more people or groups who are in opposition to each other. Its purpose is to bring about an agreement or at least a better understanding between the conflicting parties so that their differences can be settled.

Example(s)

1. The ongoing dispute between us and that rival company is negatively impacting both of us. That’s why I suggested that we parley and try to resolve our differences.

2. After months of bitter fighting, the government forces parleyed with the rebels and a ceasefire was agreed.

3. I offered to parley with John in the hope of avoiding a legal battle, but he had no interest in talking things out.
