calm or soothe
pacify - calm
If you ‘pacify’ somebody or something, you appease, allay their anger or unrest, or quieten them down. In that context, the word implies resolution through peaceful methods. However, rather confusingly, the term can also be used to express reducing somebody or something to a submissive state through the application of force.
I just wanted to pacify the angry client so I offered a full refund for the late shipment. That resolved the situation amicably.
After weeks of growing unrest in the region, government forces sent in troops tasked with the total pacification of the area.
My young daughter began to get very cranky and irritable towards the end of our trip, but I pacified her with an ice cream.
