To ‘ordain’ is to decree something by a superior authority. That authority may be a higher power in the form of God or fate, or human authority in the form of royalty, government, management, etc. The term is also frequently used in a sarcastic fashion.

1. The boss decided to ordain that casual attire was no longer permissible in the office.

2. I truly believe that outcome was meant to happen. It was like it had been ordained by fate.

3. David has ordained that he will lead the project, so of course we must all listen.
