Originally, the word ‘bilge’ was used exclusively to refer to the lowest part of a ship where water mixes with things like oil and chemicals to create a stinking, toxic waste product that frequently needs to be pumped out. The term has since been adapted to refer to a figurative type of waste, such as worthless remarks or ideas.
