approbation - approval
The formal word ‘approbation’ can be used in two different ways. Firstly, it can express commendation or acclamation received for something somebody has said or done. Secondly, it is used to refer to approval or an agreement, particularly one given by an official group. In both contexts, it has positive connotations. Most commonly seen in written English.
Tom is greedy for the approbation of others. That’s why most of what he does and says is designed to win favour or impress people.
After months of setbacks and delays, the local council has finally given its approbation for work to begin on the new facility.
I wasn’t naive enough to think that our new product would receive universal approbation, but I certainly didn’t expect this level of hostility.
